Latest Swelling Cell Battery: Sony Ericsson’s BST-33

BST-33
We’ve been covering a lot of stories regarding malfunctioning batteries over the past few weeks here at The Battery Times. While swelling or exploding batteries can pose a risk to the users, most of the time they are just an annoying inconvenience.
The latest cellular phone model to be experiencing said malfunctions is the Sony Ericsson BST-33. The BST-33’s issues are particularly interesting because it uses a Li-Polymer battery. In most of the cases we here about, and with most of the batteries that end up being recalled by manufacturers, it has been Li-Ion batteries that have typically been more prone to swelling and even, in the most extreme cases, exploding. Our friends over at Engadget have been on top of this story as some of their readers have been sending in pictures of the expanding batteries. One of their readers had the battery inside his W880i handset swell to a full 7-mm, almost doubling it’s size from the original 4-mm.
If you are an owner of a Sony Ericsson handset, you may want to take a quick look to make sure this isn’t taking place with your battery. Here is a list of compatible Sony Ericsson phones: C702, G502, K530i, K550im, K800i, K810i, M600i, P1i, P990i, W300i, W302, W595, W610i, W660i, W705, W850i, W880i, W950i, W960i, Z320i, Z530i, Z610i, Z750i. If you notice swelling is taking place with the battery, contact SE right away or get in touch with the shop that sold you the phone.

I am haveing the same problem with my battery, and it is the bst-22. I had used this sony ericsson phone for a while and would put it on the charger about every third night to charge. I woke up one morning to the back cover all bulged and the battery swollen. I have since bought 2 ore batteries with the same results in a shorter amount of time. I even started charging during the day so that I could monitor it and the battery started swelling after a couple hours…
