Apple Files The Patent Heard ‘Round the World
News of a cutting edge patent filed by Apple last week, one that in a sense utilizes some aspects of artificial intelligence, has generated quite a bit of buzz. If Apple does indeed follow through with production of this new type of “smart-battery”, and has not just filed this as a means to cover their bases, it would set a new standard for batteries unlike any we’ve seen before.
Here is the abstract of the patent filed by Apple at the United States Patent & Trademark Office: “Various embodiments of the present invention are directed at a method and system for recharging batteries for wireless electronic devices. According to one embodiment, a rechargeable battery is adapted to couple with a wireless electronic device at a wide range of power parameters. The rechargeable battery includes a battery core configured to house battery chemicals that can be swapped when the battery core needs to be replaced. The battery includes a battery electrical component configured to monitor the battery core and configured to communicate with the electronic device using communications signals sent along an electrical path between the electronic device and the battery electrical component. The battery includes a battery end-cap configured to house at least a portion of the battery electrical component and a battery outer shell configured to fit over at least the battery core and configured to provide physical protection to at least the battery core.”
What this would do is essentially create a universal battery that would be able to charge outside of the device through a wall charger. This new type of battery would use wireless technology, such as Wi-Fi or other short-range wireless protocols, to alert and display power levels for different batteries and devices in a network, and would find batteries that are fully charged to replace the current, dying battery. There are four sizes of battery mentioned in the patent, which means this technology is intended to be used on everything from Bluetooth headsets to MacBooks.
