Novel Concept? Wind-Up Battery Makes You Work for a Charge
While it may not be as entertaining as charging batteries via boomerang, the Wind Up Battery concept still brings power to what would otherwise be power-less circumstances.
One of the latest designs on Yanko comes from the designer Qian Jang. In aiming to provide a way to charge batteries sans electricity, Jang’s Wind Up Battery Charger recharges batteries using just a bit of elbow grease. The concept is fairly simple; when your batteries are flat, simply wind them up and you’re gadgets are good to go again.
As you can imagine, the Wind Up Battery Charger isn’t exactly the most efficient method of recharging batteries that have run out of juice. At 5 minutes of cranking away, Yanko estimates a rechargeable AA battery would be at 45% of it’s charge capacity, with 20 minutes of cranking being needed for a 100% charge. Still, if you ever found yourself in a situation where electricity was needed but not readily found, 10-20 minutes of cranking away on the Wind Up Battery Charger would likely be a small price to pay for a little bit of power.

I love this idea, but really, how many cranks would it take get any decent charge into these batteries?
