smiling-pig-clipartBatteries whose electrodes are made of pig bones? Now that’s a strange, yet potentially very beneficial development in the industry!

Scientists in Beijing have apparently developed a way to create lithium-sulfur batteries that are essentially powered by pig bones. The bones are baked and broken down, and then are used to create electrodes for the batteries.

  • “The development of rechargeable batteries that can be coupled to renewable sources is becoming more important for clean and efficient energy storage.” Yaqin Huang – Beijing University of Chemical Technology
  • “Pig bone based porous carbon has great potential in the development of novel cathode materials for building the next generation of energy storage devices.” Leela Mohana Reddy -expert in lithium ion batteries and supercapacitors at Rice University

This would be a big boost to the further development and use of lithium-sulfur batteries.
